The Historic Town of Hedon has been home to the Haven Veterinary Group for over fifty years. We can be found on Ketwell Lane, just by Hedon Primary School and we are fortunate to have ample car parking available. This part of the practice houses the offices where the Farm Animal and Equine side of the practice is based as well as one of our small animal practices.
At our Hedon small animal surgery we are happy to see all your pets – from dogs to dragons (bearded or otherwise), from cats to chinchillas and the whole range in between, be they feathered, furred or scaly.
You will be greeted by our friendly and experienced team of receptionists, led by Carol Burnham, who can offer advice, appointments or just be someone sympathetic to talk to.
We have three modern consulting rooms where you and your pet can be seen by one of our team of vets.
Our veterinary team at Hedon consists of Jim Morris, the principal of the practice, Mike Geary, Kim Barrow and Elisabeth Pocock. Our vets are assisted by an able and experience staff of animal nurses.
Over the last few years improvements at Hedon mean that we can now perform many of the services previously only done at Holderness Road. We now perform most surgical procedures at Hedon and have a modern theatre suite for this purpose. We have x-ray facilities and an in-house laboratory for many diagnostic procedures. We can also carry out ultrasound scanning and ECG’s if needed. We have a hospital area where your pet is monitored post-operatively or if admitted as a medical emergency.
In common with the rest of the practice, we use Sevoflurane as our gaseous anaesthetic. This is the safest agent available – we know how precious your pet is to you and how stressful the thought of an anaesthetic can be.
We run on an all-appointment system as we feel that this minimises waiting times for you and your pet. We perform non-emergency surgery in the morning allowing your pet to be recovered enough to go home in the late afternoon.
The whole of our team are here to help, so if you have any questions or concerns about your pet, please ring us.
Farm Animal at Hedon
Our farm team consists of Jim Morris, Idonea Pickering and Elisabeth Pocock. We can also draw on the talents of our specialist pig consultant Mark White, who is one of only three specialists in pig medicine in the UK. Together they have over seventy years experience in Farm Animal and Equine veterinary medicine.
The office at Hedon is run by site administrator Kate Danby, ably assisted by Jo Simpson. They organise the vets and staff the on-site dispensary.
The large animal section deals with all types of large animal work. This includes preventative medicine advice, vaccinations, surgical intervention, general farm work and health monitoring schemes. The in-house laboratory at Hedon also allows the vets to perform various tests, including necropsies, micro-biology and blood biochemistry.
The farm animal team is also heavily involved with the British Pig Health Scheme (BPHS) which is helping to improve the health of the national pig herd.
Our large animal team is also licensed by DEFRA to certify farm animals, semen and animal food for export and are especially experienced in panel 1 export certification.
A full emergency service is provided. At weekends and bank holidays, small animal emergencies are seen until 4pm at Holderness Road. Night work is undertaken on our behalf by Vets Now at the PDSA Petaid Hospital at Brunswick Avenue, Hull who will give free out of hours advice over the phone . This has allowed us to focus and be much more proactive during the days when we see 99% of our clients. This means you will not see a dishevelled vet that has been up all night working! We have found this venture to be of great importance as it has allowed us to concentrate and be at our best when we are needed most, whilst providing the essential cover for our patients at all times.
The large animal section undertakes its own emergency out of hours work at all times.
