We’re delighted to be supporting Lewis, the Nice 2b Nice charity’s lovely Support Dog

We celebrated our sponsorship of Lewis, the Support Dog from Hull charity Nice 2b Nice, by welcoming the eight month old Labrador, and owner David Freer, to our Hedon practice on last week.

Nice 2b Nice supports disadvantaged children under the age of 16 living in the Hull and East-Riding area and will use therapy dog, Lewis to bring comfort to sick children and those with learning disabilities once he has completed his training in March.

We will be sponsoring Lewis’ routine medical care during the year and our fundraising team hopes to raise a significant amount through a series of fundraising activities, including vet Pippa Kaplowitch and nurse Emma Wyndham who will complete the national Three Peaks Challenge for the charity.

Lisa Dibnah, from our accounts department is a member of the charity committee who heard of a local charity that was starting a new venture with a therapy dog.

Lisa said: “I found out about Nice 2b Nice through a friend whose son had attended a ‘surprise day’ at his primary school and it was clear that this charity is making a big impression on people’s lives.

“In the past, we have held numerous fundraising events throughout the year for different charities, but this year, we all agreed that we could make a bigger impact by supporting a single local charity that really makes a difference in the community.

“It’s great to support Nice 2b Nice as it is a charity that is just beginning to take therapy dogs into hospitals, hospices, schools, and other places dogs are not usually allowed, in order to cheer people up.

Lisa concluded: “We hope that it’s a cause that many of our clients will be keen to get involved with too, as animal lovers.”

David Freer established Nice 2b Nice in 2014 after campaigning to raise funds to replace a boy’s stolen wheelchair.

The charity helps to provide financial support, organise surprise days, operates a respite centre and care home and offers a therapy dog service.

David said: “We’re delighted that Haven has chosen to support us and Lewis.

“Dogs like Lewis spread a lot of happiness and provide a mental lift for those who are hospitalised or receiving medical treatment at home,” he added.

“During his training, Lewis has had a great effect on the children we support and, once he’s fully trained, we’d like to help many more children.”

Congratulations, Carol on your 40th anniversary with Haven Veterinary Group

We were delighted to mark a special staff anniversary with a surprise lunch recently.

Carol Burnham, pictured left above, head receptionist of the small animal department at our Hedon practice, celebrated 40 years of service with 15 colleagues as we toasted her anniversary over lunch.

Her husband Richard and retired colleagues also made an appearance for the occasion when she was presented with a watch and a bouquet of flowers by our owner and principal vet, Jim Morris.

Carol, of Burstwick, joined the practice initially working in the large animal side of the business before moving over to the small animal department.

 Jim paid tribute to her commitment to the practice: “We’re very pleased to mark Carol’s 40 years of service here at Haven and we’d all like to wholeheartedly thank her for her loyal service.

“She is one of the first people our patients and owners see when they visit the practice and her willingness to help is exemplary.”

Lisa Dibnah, who works in the finance department, said: “It was lovely to surprise Carol with a special lunch, and reminisce about the funny things that had happened over the years.”

Carol said it was wonderful to mark the milestone with her colleagues and friends.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their support over the years – the practice has really grown from the early days when the large animal department was in a Portakabin.”

We’re delighted that our equine practice has been upgraded by the RCVS

The team at our equine practice in Hedon are celebrating after being upgraded to the new accreditation level Equine General Practice – Ambulatory by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) – the highest accreditation we could receive for the facilities at our Ketwell Lane site.

Equine General Practice – Ambulatory is an accreditation for equine practices that provide a GP level service without stabling facilities or premises where horses are treated. It means the practice meets RCVS Core and GP requirements in all modules except In-Patients.

Our owner and principal vet, Jim Morris, said that receiving news of the standard upgrade is an official acknowledgement of the equine teams’ expertise.

“We work hard to maintain high standards of veterinary care here at the practice and this latest accreditation shows our dedication to our profession,” he added.

To attain the RCVS General Practice grade, veterinary practices must meet a range of minimum standards including hygiene, 24-hour emergency cover, staff training, certain types of equipment and cost estimation procedures.

On the subject of equestrian matters (ish!), our practice manager, Mandy Dobbs will be testing her riding skills when she competes in the annual Camel Derby at Beverley Races on 17th August. Sporting silks in Haven’s colours, Mandy is competing in the race to raise money for Save the Children.

Mandy said: “This will certainly be different to riding horses, but it’s a fantastic cause, and I’m looking forward to what should be a fun event for charity.”

Violet the Weimaraner joins veterinary nurses to help rescue puppies

How about this for a good news story?

When the RSPCA Hull and East Riding Branch put out an appeal for people to hand rear eight puppies, kind hearted nurses at Haven Veterinary Group were the first to step forward.

Haven’s Practice Manager, Mandy Dobbs saw the appeal and enlisted her colleague, senior veterinary nurse Hayley Bateman to help hand rear the pups.

Hayley takes up the story: “The eight pups had been delivered by caesarean section at another veterinary practice. Unfortunately, their mum was too emaciated to nurse them, so the RSPCA put out an appeal to find people to hand rear them.

“Mandy asked me if I’d be able to help and suggested that we took four puppies each. As soon as I took them home, my home bred Weimaraner, Violet, whose own litter had been weaned eight months ago, was immediately drawn to the puppies.

“In between the three hourly feeds that I gave the puppies, Violet would groom them and within two weeks, her milk started to come back in and she was able to feed the puppies herself. Although I continued to supplement Violet’s milk with hand feeding, it soon became clear that she had full milk and was able to look after the pups herself.”

Sadly, four of the eight puppies were not strong enough to survive, but Violet’s surrogate litter of one dog and three bitches are now ready to be rehomed.

Hayley concludes: “We’re delighted to have found local homes for two of the puppies, Seth and Kaia with the Homan and Goucher families respectively. Although this story has a happy ending, as the festive season approaches, it does serve as a timely reminder that a dog is for life and not just for Christmas.”

We’re delighted to be hopping to it for Rabbit Awareness Week

Rabbits in the Hull and Hedon areas will enjoy a week in the spotlight as staff at an East Yorkshire veterinary group prepare for the tenth anniversary of the national event, Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW).

Haven Vet Group is getting into the spirit of the awareness week, a campaign to promote rabbit welfare, which takes place from June 18 to 26.

Small animal vet Kimberley Barrow and registered veterinary nurse Andrea Pugh are working together to lead the events which will be taking place at the practice during this week.

Rabbit owners can now book their pets in for a free bunny MOT and complimentary claw clip from June 18 to 26. This includes a nose to tail examination to check the rabbit’s health and wellbeing, and visitors can also get advice on diet, neutering, vaccination, parasite treatments, behaviour and weight.

Both the Holderness Road, Hull and Ketwell Lane, Hedon practices are also offering a 10 per cent discount for owners who’d like to book their rabbits in for a vaccination or neutering during the month of June.

Andrea said: “Sadly, rabbits can be overlooked as pets. Most dog and cat owners would notice straight away if their pet was not eating or unwell, but rabbits sometimes do not receive the care they need.

“Generally, we tend to see a lot of dental issues, such as overgrown teeth. Rabbits also need to be let out of their hutches to get exercise – in the wild, they are free to run around in areas equivalent to three football pitches, so this is really important. They are complex animals, perhaps more complex than people realise, and seriously need looking after.”

Cage hygiene is also something Andrea is keen to make rabbit owners aware of.

“Rabbits are susceptible to fly strike which occurs when the rabbit is not kept adequately clean at the rear. This attracts flies that can get in and when the maggots hatch, they eat the flesh. We have seen some shocking cases of this.”

She has compiled a fact sheet to hand out to all owners who make appointments for a rabbit examination at either of the practices.

According to the RAW website, rabbits are the fourth most popular pet in the UK with 8,000 rabbits being kept as pets.

This year’s campaign is focusing on companionship for rabbits, with the hashtag #BuddiesforBunnies taking a focus.

“Companionship for rabbits is a good thing, but owners need to know how to introduce a new rabbit in the best way possible, and this is also something we can advise on,” Andrea adds.

We’re delighted to welcome new RVN, Andrea Pugh to our practice

Andrea Pugh RVN rWe’re pleased to announce that Mrs Andrea Pugh has joined the team at Haven Veterinary Group as a full-time RVN and clinical coach to the trainee veterinary nurses and will work out of both the Hull and Hedon practices.

Mrs Pugh started her career as a receptionist at a veterinary practice in Bridlington before beginning her veterinary nursing training in 2013 at The College of Animal Welfare in Tingley near Leeds.

After completing the two-year course and qualifying as a registered veterinary nurse, Mrs Pugh continued to work in Bridlington where she still lives.

At Haven Veterinary Group she said she wants to make more people aware of the services veterinary nurses offer.

“I’m delighted to join the team at Haven.  It’s been a while since we have had a practising RVN at the Holderness Road branch, and we’d like to remind people that I am here for them to chat with should they have any issues with their pets. The RVN role is similar to that of a Nurse Practitioner at a Doctor’s surgery and I can make referrals to the vet where necessary.”

Mrs Pugh also offers weight management and adolescent clinics for puppies and kittens, senior clinics, second vaccinations, nail clippings and anal gland expressions, among other services.

She is one of the practice’s two clinical coaches for any students training to be a RVN.

Haven Vet Group owner and principal vet Jim Morris said: “Andrea is an excellent addition to the team at both practices.

“We have recently invested significantly in our Holderness Road practice, and we’re keen to continue to offer much-needed extended services like weight management clinics and excellent levels of care for all our patients.”

Long serving staff notch up over 250 years of service

Long serving staff enjoy afternoon tea at the Holiday Inn at Hull MarinaA dedicated team of 10 staff has clocked up a collective 257 years of service as Haven Veterinary Group celebrates the achievements of its long serving employees.

Members of staff at the Hull veterinary practice, which operates branches in Holderness Road and on Ketwell Lane, Hedon, marked the occasion with afternoon tea at the Holiday Inn on Hull Marina.

Sheila Clayton, who first joined the Hull practice in 1974 as a veterinary nurse, is the longest serving member of staff with a total of 42 years with the group.

She said: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time in different roles with the practice. We’ve certainly grown – at first there was only one other veterinary nurse who used to look after reception with me.

“It’s amazing how things have changed over the years – when I joined we used to be a walk-in surgery and now we’re constantly filling our vets’ diaries with appointments.”

Other long serving members of staff include cleaner Jo Brentano; vet Do Pickering, branch administrator Anne Docherty and receptionists Gail Dungworth, Sandra Atkinson, Judy Farnes, Cheryl Broderick and the second longest-serving staff member Carol Burnham.

Haven Vet Group owner and principal vet Jim Morris, who is also celebrating 25 years of service, treated the group to the afternoon tea for the occasion.

He said: “It’s moments like this that make my job special and I’m very proud to be supported by such a great and loyal team.

“I wanted to do something to celebrate our collective long service, and show my appreciation because this is a real milestone for the group.”

Haven Veterinary Group was formed in 1907 by Mr Dugdill who set up a practice in the Holderness area.

Over the years the group relocated to Hedon then expanded with the opening of the branch in Holderness Road. Haven Veterinary Group now employs 32 people including seven vets.

Here’s an update about the refurbishments at the Holderness Road practice

Jim Morris in the isolation wardPet owners in the Hull area will soon be able to make the most of an upgrade and refurbishment at Haven Veterinary Group’s Holderness Road practice following extensive work at the surgery.

The vet group has kept its Hull branch open during the five-month refurbishment project which has seen the group invest in a six-figure sum for the works.

Haven Veterinary Group owner and Principal Vet Jim Morris said: “This is one of the most significant upgrades for the surgical and hospital areas that I’ve seen since I joined the practice 25 years ago.

“The practice was originally formed from two private dwellings on the site and we have always strived to improve our services with frequent upgrades.

“By doing so, we’re able to continue to provide excellent levels of care for the animals we see to.”

One of the most eagerly awaited changes to the surgery is addition of new dedicated cat and reptile wards.

“This means our furry and scaly visitors will be able to stay somewhere they feel safe, and out of the gaze of large dogs which makes a huge difference to them,” adds Mr Morris.

There is also a new purpose-built isolation facility, a dedicated training room and walk-in kennels for large dogs. Lights and tables for the operating theatres have also been upgraded alongside the laboratory equipment, enabling the practice to provide more in-house tests with quicker results.

The updates follow the refurbishment of the dirty operations and radiology areas at the clinic last year.

The works are being undertaken for the practice by Hull-based building company MK Services.

Hull Veterinary Group offers help for new puppy owners

Vespa 2The practicalities of caring for a new puppy is something pet owners owners might not think about straight away, so Haven Veterinary Group is issuing information for those who have made a furry addition to the household since Christmas, as well as those contemplating getting a puppy.

The group’s advice comes ahead of new legislation which requires dog owners in England to microchip and register their dog. The new laws will come into force from April 6.

Jim Morris, Haven Veterinary Group owner and Principal Vet, said: “We want to help new pet owners give their animals a healthy start to life.

“While puppies are a joy to have around, they also require a great deal of commitment, hard work and effort to care for. We would like people to know that they can contact either of our branches at Hedon or Hull for help and guidance regarding their new pets.”

The team at Haven Veterinary Group have put together seven top tips for new dog owners:

1. Make an appointment for a check-up with the vet as soon as you have your puppy. During this visit, the vet will check the overall health of your puppy and be able to advise you on vaccinations, worming and health issues.

2. Ensure you microchip and register your dog – and make sure you keep the details up to date. Haven Veterinary Group offers microchipping services at both practices. From April 6 this year, microchipping will be a legal requirement.

3. Put thought into the environment you create for your dog. Puppies need a draught-free, warm, quiet and clean place to sleep. You will have to teach them where to eat and train them where to go to the toilet.

4. Strongly consider neutering your dog. This will help reduce the number of unwanted pets, prevent diseases and some unwanted behaviours.

5. Always use a food suitable for your puppy’s breed and size, and make sure clean, fresh drinking water is available. You can ask your vet for advice on what, and how much, to feed your puppy.

6. Your puppy will want something to chew on so try a nylon bone, rawhide chews or large hard biscuits.

7. Take the time to gently expose your puppy to as many experiences as possible. Meeting other puppies and dogs (only when protected by vaccinations), new people, sights and sounds will help your puppy to be well-socialised and well-behaved.
