Avian Influenza Outbreak in East Yorkshire

Avian Influenza outbreak in East Yorkshire – No need to panic.

It is being reported that an outbreak of avian influenza has been confirmed in East Yorkshire and as expected, people are concerned about the risks to humans.

At Haven Veterinary Group Ltd, we would like to offer the following advice and hope it helps to allay your concerns.

Avian influenza spreads from bird to bird by direct contact or with contaminated body fluids/faeces. Avian influenza isn’t an airborne disease.

Some strains of avian influenza can pass to humans with very close contact between a human and infected birds, but this is extremely rare. There is no evidence to suggest that this particular strain has been able to spread directly between humans.

The Food Standards Agency also advises that properly cooked poultry and poultry products including eggs are safe to eat.
