Veterinary Group invests in equine x-ray machine and ultrasound equipment

horsesA Hull veterinary group has invested in new portable x-ray and ultrasound equipment to extend its range of equine services.

The portable x-ray machine is the first for the Haven Veterinary Group, that has practices in Hull and Hedon, and the equipment will be based at the group’s large animal practice in Ketwell Lane, Hedon.

With the investment in the equipment, the group can now offer equine orthopaedic imaging using both x-ray and ultrasound for tendons, ligaments, joints and bones.

With the accompaniment of a digital processor, the vets can access images immediately.

The group first used the x-ray machine in September and Pippa Kaplowitch, a mixed animal vet who does most of the horse work, will operate the machine with the help of head nurse Mandy Dobbs.

Miss Kaplowitch said: “This new equipment means we are able to expand our equine department and provide clients with better services.”

Miss Dobbs said the new facility enables the team to do the diagnostics themselves whereas in the past, they would have to refer the animal to be x-rayed.

“The portable machine reduces stress on the horses as they do not have to travel and sometimes the owners don’t have transport so we can take the machine to the yard where the horse is kept.

“It also helps to limit further damage to the horse in cases of suspected fractures.”

The machine, provided by Processing Imaging Equipment Services, Huddersfield, is completely portable and can easily be transported to any of the areas that Haven’s Hull and Hedon practices cover.
